i took my cat on his first Amtrak train trip for Thanksgiving. it was tough finding a carrier that met Amtrak's requirements that was also big enough for my large (17 pound) cat who dislikes carriers. however, expanding all the sides made it more enticing for him to get in and used to it. once comfortable, it was very easy to zip up the sides and he was only slightly surprised by the smaller space. he was comfy for the entire 7 hours. on the train, the only side he really needed/liked unzipped was one of the smaller sides so he could poke his head out (and was also helpful for giving him treats). i was glad because the zippers do catch a bit - just unzip slowly / cautiously.
