Review on Classic Collection SuperMask II - Horse Fly Mask, Assorted colors by Tracy Anderson

Dramatic changes in design and fit!

Farnam redesigned these masks and I'm guessing the model used was a plastic horse that doesn't itch or move. The black mask in the photos is an earlier version of this FOAL sized mask that was modeled from my 220 lb size A mini horse that measures 28 inches at the withers. The blue mask is a new version of the foal of the same size. Huge in every aspect of the design, it bends too low and touches the sensitive area around the nose, causing headshakes. I've always had to adapt foal sized fly masks to the mini size A by adding an adjustable velcro strap at the top, but this mask was oversized all over and looked more like the weaner size. Farnam made fly masks for miniatures and size A was perfect for him. I then ordered another mask brand as I can no longer use Farnam masks on this horse. Luckily I have a 300 lb size B mini mask that I could use this mask on, but I had to insert darts at cheek level to raise the velcro because it actually looks more like CHIN LATCH and doesn't resist, from the Mask to be removed Horse rubs it against the thing. The only brands of fly masks I've found on a horse are ones that have the latch under the cheek near the throat, not under it. When the mask is pulled over the face, they need a neck and chin strap to keep them in place. It should more closely match the support provided by a bridle or halter. I have been buying Farnam fly masks for almost 3 decades and still have the ones I bought for large horses about 30 years ago and they are still in usable condition, all new masks to the market in the last 10 years came are easier to damage. As time goes on the quality gets worse, a typical degradation of production materials and processes in companies and unfortunately I spend a lot of time sewing fly masks on 50 year old Japanese full metal sewing machines or 100 year old Wheeler and Motorized-Ex repair and rework - a Wilson pedal that is not technically an industrial machine but can easily handle multiple shifts and use larger needles. I wish I could just buy a fly mask that fits and lasts like vintage Farnams.
