I don't feel confident or patient enough to work with whetstones so sharpening seemed like a reasonable compromise. The bar arrangement allows me to just hold the knife straight and slide straight down so the bar holds the angle for me. The staves included in the kit work great with knives that aren't entirely blunt. If you have a very dull knife, it will take a lot of effort to get it sharp again. This will certainly improve very dull knives, but it won't get them really sharp without a lot of effort (other rods that help with this can be purchased separately). On the other hand, knives that are in good condition but need a little repair work very well with this device.
