Review on Masterpiece Artist Canvas MS 0814 Cotton by Carol Miller

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Great for all materials and shipping was easy.

I was concerned about ordering such a large canvas online as shipping a 3ft x 5ft piece can seem like a daunting task, but as usual Revain have made it so easy. The canvas arrived within 2 days via Fed-Ex and was professionally packed in a slightly larger box with paper padding to protect the canvas. The canvas was in pristine condition; still wrapped in plastic and met all my expectations. As for the canvas itself, Masterpiece makes different types of canvas, both in cotton and linen. This is a heavy (14 oz primed) distinct tooth meaning cotton is quite thick and has a slightly rough finish which is great for adding texture to the finished painting. (Think of it like fine sandpaper, a bit rough). I would suggest this type of tooth for landscapes or abstract/contemporary art projects. If you plan to paint portraits, still lifes, or highly detailed work, you may want to use a smooth canvas as it can give the paint a slightly rough appearance. This is great for layering and adding depth to an image. Rough canvas or linen will take paint from a brush much better than thin canvas. So your drawing style will affect your choice here, if you paint landscapes or more textured work then you will probably prefer a rougher tooth. However, for realistic paintings or animal portraits, you can get better detail with a finer tooth. It all depends on the type of effect you're hoping for and the type of artist (not to mention how much money you have, i.e. linen canvas usually costs a lot more than lighter cotton). Keep in mind that with such a pronounced tooth surface, your brushes will wear out faster due to the surface friction of the tooth. This is important to keep in mind when using small hairbrushes and working on a lot of detail. I prefer to use nylon brushes on this type of canvas. Overall, like most Masterpiece products, this canvas is great for the average artist looking to create something for their home, or for students, beginners, and intermediate artists. Professionals may choose canvas for its superior durability, durability and surface hardness. One final note: Revain often fluctuates in the price of canvases, so I often put what I want on my wish list and look at it for a while before buying. For example, this canvas is listed at 27% off retail at the time of writing this review, but I received it at 64% off within a 3 day window when Revain significantly reduced the price. $60 saved. ;8^) Professionals may choose canvas for its superior durability, durability and surface hardness.
