Sometimes the HDMI sound was missing.
with both sockets when I changed DirecTV channels. He didn't do it every day, just often enough to make me hate him. Sometimes turning the splitter on/off restored the sound, sometimes I had to disconnect/reconnect the HDMI connection to the splitter. This problem persisted even after switching to a new satellite receiver.
