Great knife sharpening set

Blade sharpening set. I've used the sharpening kit 3 times and have sharpened over a dozen blades (knives and cutting tools). I feel like I can fairly comment on the product. Having a 400, 1000, 3000, and 8000 grit range is extremely useful. For most of my grinding work, especially tools (like garden shears), I only used a 400/1000 stone. If you're starting out with a fairly dull blade, you'll want a 400 grit sharpener - this stone removes most of the metal material to get a sharp edge, otherwise it takes forever to sharpen the blade with finer grit stones. Blade/knife sharpening is a learned skill that improves with practice: finding the right pressure to apply, the right (and consistent) angle to hold the blade on the stone, and the best motion to move the blade across the stone to lead stone. When sharpening for the first time, be patient, "dexterity" develops after several attempts. (Watching videos on youtube about sharpening blades can be very helpful.) One of the most common mistakes I find is prematurely going from a coarser to a finer grit. Coarse grit stones sharpen the edge, finer whetstones polish the edge to razor sharpness. These stones appear to adhere well and are of an even consistency. With the amount of loops I make in a typical household, I expect these stones to last a lifetime. Additional items in the form of a silicone stone holder and bamboo base as well as a 'grindstone' to keep the sharpening stones smooth and even and a leather strap for finishing the edge polishing are a big plus. The angle guide included in the kit is helpful in getting an idea of what angle to use when sharpening, but I quickly abandoned it once I got the technique down. (One unintended use I found was that the 8000 grit is good for sharpening the rotating blades in Norelco men's razors!) I highly recommend this product based on my experience with it.

Pros
  • โœ… Easy to use: The professional quality white corundum sharpening stone is corrosion and heat resistant, very durable and easy to assemble. You don't need expensive sharpening/honing oil as it works best with water. It can be easily washed with water.
Cons
  • The cable is shorter than other picks.
