6" Filter OVERVIEW (4 stars due to custom filter size) AC Infinity makes great products and this new 6" filter pack is no exception. It is essentially identical to the Fantech FB6, except the AC Infinity version: 1) uses 12x20x1 filters "instead of 10x20x1 filters", 2) is black instead of brown, 3) the lid hinges instead of popping out with wing nuts, 4) doesn't have the pre-drilled "hanging holes" that you have to glue on the Fantech version, and 5) has metal duct connectors instead of plastic ones. It is important to note that the Infinity 6" AC Filter Box, like the Fantech FB6, is NOT designed to accept a nominal 12x20x1" filter. It comes with an 11 1/2" x 19 3/8" AC Infinity filter and fits into a metal filter rack inside the box. There is only about 1/16 inch clearance between the filter and the metal post. This means this filter will NOT fit 3M Filtrete 12x20x1" filters, actual dimensions are 11 13/16" x 19 13/16". You will need either replacement AC Infinity filters (if/if available) or other filters with a 1/2" cut in length and width. This is early thanks to Fantech FB6 and Dupont makes several 1/2" inline filters that you should be able to put in (beware some filters have Dupont 1/4" inserts only). AC Infinity (and Fantech) are in a dilemma because they don't want air to bypass the filters, so when there isn't a standard insert size among filter manufacturers, it's difficult to do well. The Pleats are tight instead of the thin filter in the Fantech FB6 kit I didn't bother to disassemble the filter to ensure the filter media was carefully taped to the inner perimeter of the box to avoid leakage AC Infinity versus Fantech FB6, if (1) you need an extra 2 inches of width e and (2) AC Infinity values their replacement filters. ethical (to specify). The additional 2" filter width (12" vs. 10") on a 6" system helps control pressure drop, which at Fantech reaches a parabolic value of about 150 cfm. Also, Fantech replacement filters are flimsy and overpriced at around $30, well above the prices of standard replacement filters (hence the jamming of Dupont filters). It would give 5 stars if AC Infinity sold replacement filters at a reasonable price (I haven't seen replacement filters for sale yet). CHECK 8: Buy an 8 inch filter if you have the space. It literally fits 3M Filtrete 14x20x1" filters perfectly and will save you a ton of brain damage. This filter box is a big boy, but the build quality is EPIC. Thank you AC Infinity for sticking to the standard filter size with this model! ( Btw keep mentioning 3M Filtrete filters because they are well constructed, readily available and offer a wide range of MERV/MPR options at different price points Elimination of all 3M filters, even much cheaper (this level of filter)
