I put off buying a DVD recorder until I got a (relatively) new Plextor 16x dual layer recorder at a reasonable price. However, it seems that Plextor recorders (the optical drive reference) are currently suffering from quality issues, forcing me to look elsewhere. I stumbled upon the Sony DRU720A at my local store, got a good price (not as good as the current offering here at Revain!) and took it home with me with no great expectations. Home video DVDs transferred from VHS using a DVD burner. So far I've recorded about 40 discs with Sony and I'm pleasantly surprised! My Windows XP computer recognized the disc immediately and installed the supplied Nero software without any problems. I haven't tried all parts of the software yet, mainly the DVD ripping feature which works great. I use Sony 8x DVD-R media off the spindle and haven't had a single failure yet. Based on my experience I would recommend this drive without hesitation. And at the price advertised above, this should be pretty much the best value for money branded DVD writer available right now.
