Drilled cleanly through hard river rock/pebble

Had to drill a hole in a small smooth river rock half an inch thick. I'm not sure what type of rock it is (maybe basalt?). I placed the rock in a small bowl of cold water, dropped the drill bit into the dremel and with light pressure let the drill bit do its job, pausing every 20-30 seconds to clean the hole and avoid overheating the prevent drilling. It lasted about 10-12 minutes but ended up being pierced. A few notes: 1 - I tried to center the hole but the drill bit deflected to the side. I drilled freehand and don't have a drill press or other means of centering the stone, so any suggestions are welcome. second photo). The outlet is also wider than the inlet. Neither poses a problem for me in my application, but any suggestions on how to avoid it are very welcome. So far I've only used one bit once and it worked as advertised. If I follow the procedure outlined, I expect them to last me a long time. Your mileage may vary.
