My cat had never been shaved before. He's 17 and running on 3 legs. It's been hard for him to groom himself since the surgery and he started getting mats. He's medium haired with a thick undercoat. I took these to him in 2 different sessions. It was a bit noisy for him the first time. The second go was much easier and he was a bit more calm.
