Review on πŸ“š Efficient Digital Filing Made Easy: NeatReceipts Mobile Scanner and Filing System for Mac by Duke Ballard

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Software is awesome now, not hardware

I've had this system for almost a year now and am using Neat Scanner just a few months after buying it. This device is just a waste of money; It scans single-sided pages (which usually need to be held by hand to keep them from curling) at a very slow and inefficient speed. Those with decent hardware in mind should check out their high-end devices. I later got the significantly more powerful Fujitsu ScanSnap S1500M, which is light years ahead of NeatCo's hardware (even their "more powerful" NeatDesk model, which I also used as a colleague. Highly recommend over that brand.) The software is serviceable, but as others have pointed out, there are limitations (see Late UPDATE below). One of the most worrying is that according to NeatCo's technical support, even their software only supports FIVE scanners! Let's face it, scanning isn't rocket science and OCR has been around for a long time. How difficult is it to even adapt to the most popular scanners? This company seems to care very little about quality and much more about marketing. While Fujitsu's software leaves a lot to be desired, their hardware is a real choice if you want to keep track of receipts and the like. Unfortunately, there's no software yet that can compete with Neat's potentially useful program. If only the two could play well together. UPDATE MARCH 2011: Neat just released a much improved software update and it's almost perfect now. They really listened to the users. An evaluation of cheap scanners and my Fujitsu recommendation are still pending.

Pros
  • Not cheap but decent
Cons
  • Nothing
