I think they last about two years. The last pair I installed is 23 months old and is now virtually ineffective. When I first installed Sioux Chief arresters, the cylinders were copper. Then we switched to stainless steel bottles with label stickers. Their latest versions have stainless steel barrels with a laser-engraved label and date stamp. I called Sioux Chief to make sure the laser engraved versions weren't fake (they weren't!). During a conversation with Sioux Chief, it was recommended that two surge arresters be used on each line... one on the car and one on the wall. They said it would extend the life of the flame arrestors. They were developed well before the use of ultra-fast solenoid valve washing machines and are not really designed to be abused by these new machines that will wash laundry at lightning speed many times in a single load. When using two arresters per line, the impact load is distributed almost equally between the two arresters. I actually concatenated the two together for each line on the machine. I've re-marked the install date with a marker and see if they now last the full rated number of cycles according to the sales literature. I hope I'm over four years old. By the way, you can test your old arresters by pressing on the damper with a screwdriver. The dampers on the new arresters did not move under light loads, while the old versions went through the full stroke very easily. It was obvious that they were at the end of their lives.
