This palette is made of flexible plastic with a very glossy finish. The lack of rigidity means that the palette wobbles a bit and does not allow the lid to close properly. Paints don't stick to the glossy surface, so when you close the lid, dried paint from the upper compartments falls into the lower ones. I had other palettes with glossy finishes that I sanded down with fine sandpaper before adding color. I didn't sand this palette so I don't know if the paint will stick to it. Another problem with them is that they aren't flat when closed, so they don't stay folded when stowed - they slide off anything they're folded onto. A really silly thing about this and many other palettes are the holes for your brushes. . I know many watercolor painters and none of them hold a palette while working. If the pallet is lying flat on the work surface, the brushes cannot be inserted into the holes. It would be better to remove the holes and increase the color mixing area. I love the basic design of this palette. The low angled compartments provide plenty of room for large brushes, and I prefer the large, flat blending areas of this palette to the angled blending areas of many other palettes. I am very disappointed that this product has so many flaws. It seemed like it could be a great inexpensive palette.
