Change 4 crosses a year. I have two tracked machines, I circle 9 months a year, constantly revving up and down from 4000 to 6500 in 3rd and 4th gear while constantly dumping mud out of the rear suspension. It only makes sense to use sealed universal joints (they are stronger) and swap them out at the beginning of each season, as dropping the driveshaft onto the redline retaining tab will cause the transmissions and/or differentials to seize. This pup glides over them. Pull it out and reinsert the new one as if you added another half inch ChapStick. No cups or anything required; The worm screw presses onto the surface of the hinge cover very well and you can block the open end with any old flat bar, worn pad backing or whatever to reinstall. Also, I can toss it in a tool box to take to the track and if I hear an awkward U-joint noise I can use it to replace it in a paddock without a vise. Try it out with your 20 ton port freight press! I use an impact wrench to tighten the auger, but a pry bar will do. A standard sized socket fits snugly on the end of the worm (can't remember the correct size above). Haven't tried it for ball joints - I'm a big hammer/crowbar guy. there - but if you have the space to put it there, I'm sure it will get the job done. I suspect the main place it won't replace a real press is when repairing transmissions.
