Review on Enhanced Black Kyocera Soft Grip Kitchen Mandoline Slicer for Improved Precision and Performance by Kyle Gilbert

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Great but limited features

This is a great little mandolin, but its limitations make it perfect for some jobs and not others. The width of the cut is indicated by numbers from 1 to 4, with 1 being the thinnest and 4 being the thickest. This is the salad I made for lunch. The cucumber was cut into 4 pieces which is a great size for a salad. The carrots were cut into 2 pieces (in this case specially chopped), which I prefer to my previous coarse grating method. I also used 1 to make onion slices for cucumber, tomato and onion salad with basalt vinaigrette dressing. It was perfect for the flavor of the onion without the big bite of the raw onion. I suppose 1 or 2 would be a good size for potato chips. The caveat is that 4 is pretty thin. That's not what I want for braised zucchini or carrots. I made a zucchini roasted corn porridge the other day and used my old mandolin to get the zucchini slices just the right thickness. I may have to look harder for replacement blades for my old Benriner mandolin, but I love these for what they do well - my Benriner doesn't do those thin slices nearly as well.

Pros
  • Ultra-sharp, modern ceramic blades that stay sharp ten times longer than metal blades
Cons
  • Ugly packaging
