Review on SHIMANO PD-EH500 Dual-sided Urban Cycling Pedal for Touring and Daily Riding by Sean Garrison

Love both sides of these pedals

Recently purchased for a Giant CX bike, have ridden many miles on both sides of the pedals over the past few months and I really like these pedals. Driving with the SH-56 spikes is excellent. Tension is easily +/- adjusted, and with my medium setting I have no problem with quick engagement (even when riding in a city with a lot of stops) or loosening. The flat side with the included pegs is pretty grippy, I ride in soft EVA foam trainers and have no problem with my feet popping off even on fairly rocky terrain. If you're a flat-footed MTB rider, these pedals aren't for you (they're not that big platforms), but they're not for that anyway. My bike has a 1x SRAM Apex drivetrain made for riding. One thing that throws me off the pedals is shifting into the smallest 1 or 2 rear gears, but I can't really blame the pedals for that. (Maybe I need to upgrade the cranks!) In fact, pedaling from either side is a pleasure. Initially the pedals tipped over too easily but now they mostly stay on the side I use. I prefer to buckle up when driving around town, just because you can keep a pedal pressed for a red light and a stop and then buckle up the other leg in peace and quiet when pulling away. But I definitely rode in flats on the SPD side to escape the light and vice versa with spikes on the flat side. So yes, these pedals are hybrids, so they're not perfect in any particular situation, but overall I don't find the pedals tipping the wrong way, which is annoying. Installation is easy. You need to screw in all the pins. (If you haven't already removed the pedals from the bike, hopefully you have a pedal wrench. Or my standard wrench + hammer + swearing method will work too.) You can then use an Allen wrench or a pedal wrench to install them. I would recommend that you use a commercial waterproof thread lubricant (to keep dirt out and make it easier to remove).
