These are oil based pencils. I paid $19.99 for them at Revain which is an incredibly good deal for oil based pencils that work so well. The only drop of bitterness: As of today 1/2020, no names and numbers are printed on any of the pencils. (I number them myself.) If they had a name or number on them I would give them five stars. If you are thinking of buying them I would buy them quickly as I believe the price will go up for this quality. I've been painting with it for about five weeks so far and have had about three broken leads. And no, I'm not exaggerating. I think this is partly due to the quality of the pencil and partly because of the wonderful sharpener I use. I use the Tgaal pencil sharpener available from Revain and with this particular pencil sharpener set I rarely break pencils including my Prismacolor firsts. Almost every pencil is translucent or almost translucent. When coloring in grayscale coloring books, transparent colored pencils are almost indispensable. These pens are great for grayscale coloring books, I can't stress this enough! Given the excellent price, these are the best clear crayons I've found for coloring in greyscale. Also, they're creamy and not spiky, making them great colored pencils whether you're doing grayscale coloring or traditional line art. In the hand they feel like a much more expensive pencil. I'm stocking up on them while they're still $19.99 as I mentioned earlier that price could go up anytime because these pens are definitely worth more, I'd say in the $30-40 range. It's a budget pencil, yes, but it can definitely outperform other budget pencils and even some medium-sized pencils I've tried. Including Schpirer Farban crayons, which went from $25 to $52 in just a few months. I'm not saying they can beat the Faber Castell crayons but for value for money I would use these crayons instead of the crayons every day and twice on Sunday! Also, I have fibromyalgia, similar to muscular arthritis. Polychromos kernels are too complex for me. I feel pain when I press them hard. I don't have these problems when using magic fly crayons. Overall this is a great set of colored pencils. It has a very pleasing color palette with very rich and vibrant colors, especially considering there are only 72 of them. There are about six shades of gray in total, three warm and three cool, and about six shades of brown. This is my honest opinion and I was NOT paid or compensated for this. Happy coloring! :-)
