Review on Lisle 62970 Black Lock Ring Kit: The Ultimate Solution for Secure Fastening by Mysocalled Gaultier

Revainrating 5 out of 5

For Older GM Vehicles

The fuel pump on my 2001 Cadillac is held in place by a 5 lobe retaining ring as shown in the attached picture. (Who on earth decided five petals was a good idea? Why wasn't the ring made of stainless steel? And why hasn't anyone made a proper removal tool?) Anyway, my ring was original and rusty, and so far I know no one makes a proper tool to help with the removal. This is the closed one I could find and with some difficulty it worked. In my case, the rusty outer tabs of the locking ring bent immediately, but I was able to grab the inner circle at two points at once and adjust my fingers so the axis of rotation was along the centerline. I then used a T-handle screwdriver to unscrew the old ring, using lots of penetrant and the occasional hammer and hammer blow. The removal tool wasn't perfect, but it was the best I could find. For putting on spares, the tool was wonderful; Because the tabs on the replacement locking ring weren't bent or rusted, the Lisle tool did an excellent job of screwing the ring on and off. Tip: Apply some lubricant to the top of the retaining ring so it turns easily. So this tool wasn't ideal for my app, but it got me out of my predicament and it's the only game in town.
