This was a replacement for the same Old Thompson shaker/chopper. Unfortunately, it's not nearly as good as its predecessor. The problem is the coffee grinder, which doesn't quite catch and grind the peppercorns properly. The response when rotating the top is, for lack of a better word, sluggish. There is little to no resistance or feedback to ensure the peppercorns are properly crushed. The old plant that we still have goes ahead undaunted and grinds the peppercorns the way they are meant to be ground. I don't know if some manufacturing changes were made to counteract the "Walmart Effect" in American manufactured goods or if I have a defective device, but my particular device just doesn't live up to its older relative.
