What a surprise! for spotting scopes

This old bird still has some of the original low power hunting scopes that Simmons made back in the day. I always wondered why my dad had a 4x Leupold scope on his .22 gauge and I had a Simmons 4X. While Simmons did an acceptable job, it was in no way comparable to Leupold. Of course, my father's .22 rifle was vastly superior to the Sears model he bought me. But believe me, at the age of 10 I was absolutely thrilled to be able to go squirrel hunting. And since I trained at the local arsenal all winter, I was able to resist him. But enough of the old days. At the time, Simmons was considered a rather mediocre producer. Simmons is now a trademark of Bushnell Corporation (acquired by it in 2008), which in turn is owned by Vista Outdoor. The competition in the optics market and the great advances in this technology have meant that the current offerings are both qualitative and very affordable. This is an example of lean engineering at its finest. The Simmons scope came in a hard case, while the optics themselves were also wrapped in plastic and contained in a separate soft case. Really well protected! The kit also includes a workbench-sized tripod, along with instructions on how to locate the owner's manual and how to register the product for possible warranty coverage. Don't be afraid of instructions in five languages. As an older guy and not a hunter, I don't have to worry about lugging this rather large scope through the bushes. However, it fulfills two needs for me. First, it's extremely useful when testing .22 ammo at 100 yards. Those old eyes aren't what they used to be, and this Simmons scope makes it easy to track and evaluate my shots. Most of my shots are muted and testing different subsonic ammunition was interesting to say the least. Living in beautiful Charlotte Harbor in Southwest Florida, Mother Nature is a constant reminder of how wildlife functions and survives. Being able to focus at longer distances from our back porch has really increased our visual range, even to the far shore. We can watch bald eagles and ospreys, red-tailed hawks and Florida tawny owls in pursuit of their prey, while alligators and manatees cruise through the harbor. Entertainment for us and our guests. At around $150, it's a hell of a deal for the quality you're getting. Simmons managed to become competitive again with most of the big companies. If you want to improve the quality significantly, budget significantly more money. In the past we would have called this the "law of diminishing returns." That means you have to spend a lot more money to get more bang for your buck. Simmons proves you don't have to spend that much.

Pros
  • Sturdy tabletop tripod with integrated window mount for stable viewing
