Food is Bad for Squirrels

I did a little research to find out that peanuts can be poisonous to squirrels. April 11, 2018 serious circumstances. The results can even be deadly when peanuts make up a large and consistent part of the diet. Peanuts are a legume, not an actual nut, and when raw they contain a trypsin inhibitor, a substance that stops the pancreas from making trypsin, an enzyme needed for protein absorption in the gut. Although the exact relationship between trypsin inhibitor and malnutrition in rodents is not fully understood, deleterious effects have been documented since 1917. Therefore, squirrels constantly fed raw peanuts could easily become severely malnourished, and works such as Craig's Backyard Naturalist in Bundles point to the use of roasted peanuts. According to the Washington State Cooperative Extension Service, roasting shelled raw peanuts for twenty to thirty minutes at 300 degrees Fahrenheit with frequent stirring will destroy the trypsin inhibitor and render the peanut suitable for use as fodder. Similar precautions apply to the consumption of sweet potatoes and other raw legumes such as soybeans, which are sometimes recommended as protein foods and contain trypsin inhibitors. Of course, in no case should you give wild animals salted nuts. consult sources such as Food Chemistry edited by Owen R. Fennem or Animal Nutrition by Leonard A. Mine. ard etc.
