The numbers are clearly visible on the dial and on the steel. I've only used it a few times since I got it, but the zero remains more accurate than any pair of electronic calipers I've used. So far the sliding action is a little tight but hopefully it will get smoother as I use it more. The plastic coating on the dial was slightly worn when it arrived, so as a warning, it's possible it can rub slightly. . However, if you keep it when you're not using it, you should be fine.
