I unpacked the box and pulled out the included digital and analog cables, a two-piece power adapter, and a bag containing a quick start, safety, and warranty information CD. I then dismantled the monitor myself and removed the clear plastic protective film, which turned out to be more of a challenge than I expected. As the name suggests, the monitor is very thin, but somehow reading the words doesn't convey the visual part properly. The instructions are simple and the only assembly required is to connect the AC jack and the cable you want to use to connect to the monitor. Computer or other content source. I chose an HDMI connection because my computer came with one, so I had to provide my own cable. I plugged it into a conveniently located port on the back of the monitor stand and then into my computer. Then I connected the power cord to the monitor. To turn the LG on, I touched my finger to the on-off logo on the top-right front corner of the base, and a blue light came on. I then inserted the CD that came with LG and installed the driver. This step may not have been necessary; as windows 7 automatically detected the monitor but i wanted to make sure it was using the LG drivers and not the generic ones provided by microsoft. I went to the Windows 7 Control Panel and clicked on the Display menu item. Then I assigned LG as my only monitor and everything on my computer disappeared and reappeared on LG, not only bigger but also significantly brighter and sharper. Maybe in the future I'll turn down the brightness - it's amazing. Since my computer screen has improved a lot, I decided to see how it looks on an HDTV, so I launched Windows Media Center and went to the Live TV menu, which uses an external TV tuner and antenna to tune in to local channels to recieve. The first HD show I chose was a tennis match and the clarity of the picture made it possible to see every face in the crowd clearly and sharply; I could see all the imperfections in the ground, as well as the ball's spin. There were no bullet marks like I've seen on some flat screens. Since HD content is somewhat limited on broadcast TV, I then switched to golf. It was almost fun to watch. Nearly. Again, the brightness and clarity are mesmerizing. The clarity of the leaves on the trees and even the blades of grass flapping in the wind were visible in every detail. I could even read the brand name and see every dimple on the golf ball as it rolled across the lawn. The downside to this relentless clarity is that low-resolution TV shows and movies look worse than they do on older TVs, as the higher resolution actually highlights flaws. Not surprisingly, with the dimples on the golf ball now visible, the flaws also become more obvious. If I increase the distance between my eyes and the screen where I normally work at the computer, it actually looks good and the picture benefits from brighter colors. When you switch back to the computer, the large screen size makes it much easier to view. Use Windows 7's side-by-side feature, as the two documents displayed are still legible without the increased brightness and clarity. I don't use my computer for gaming very often, but I wanted to see how the monitor performs and see the improvement over my old LG LCD monitor. Phoenix Assault in particular was a lot more fun. There are six white dots on the base that are used to change the settings. Touching the first dot from the left brings up the menu, offering entries for Menu, Super Resolution, Super Power Saving, Volume, Input, and Output. Super Resolution gives you Normal, Low, Medium and High resolution options. I found the normal one the best. I turned on the power saving mode and the screen got a little dimmer, but not by much. The volume control does not appear to affect the level of the various audio signals coming from the monitor and only appears when the HDMI connection is active. Selecting the menu and then entering switches the connection, which in my case was from HDMI to analogue. With the analog active, the picture is not so bright, and the volume is replaced in the "auto" menu. Selecting "Auto" automatically sets the monitor to the best resolution and brightness. I bought a 20 inch LG LCD monitor about 2 years ago and recently thought it looks as good as it did when I bought it and the color and graphics are as good as I could ever get , after using E2381. I stand corrected.
