Review on πŸ’Ž Sony E 50mm F1.8 OSS Portrait Lens (SEL50F18/B) Review: A Black Gem for Captivating Portraits by Abhey Vohra ᠌

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Satisfied with the purchase one hundred percent, I recommend the product for everyone.

in my opinion, the best E-mount lens I've tried (except for Zeiss ones, I don't have them). I always take it with me, even on trips. Sharpness in the center is excellent, soft portrait drawing to the waist, which does not require fine-tuning in Photoshop. I don’t take full-length and group photos with him - there is a small depth of field on an open hole, someone is definitely out of focus. If you clamp the aperture, then there is no point in this lens, set it to 18-55 or 16-50, you will get the same quality (its absence), only with faster autofocus, and even with zoom - you don’t have to run legs. But. Somewhat slow autofocus, especially compared to Nikon lenses. Restless children are very difficult to catch. Also, compared to Nikon's fifty dollars, the lens is too big for such a compact carcass. In general, I use the Sony Nex-5N as a second camera for a Nikon D5100 DSLR, I shoot outdoors with a dark SEPL1650 on Sony + Sigma 50-150mm on Nikon, indoors I switch to SEL-50F18 and 35mm f / 1.8G fast-aperture portraits, respectively. And still, the angle is often not enough, you will have to change 35mm to 28mm. There were SEL-1855, Sigma 30mm F2.8, SEL16F28 - I sold it with relief and pleasure, I would also sell SEPL1650 because of the low picture quality (comparable to SEL-1855), but it is painfully good in terms of size and speed of autofocus as a travel- zoom.

Pros
  • aperture, sharpness in the center, excellent bokeh
Cons
  • slow autofocus, big size

an excellent half-tone which optically outperforms similar half-tones from DSLRs! I recommend it to all Nex owners
