I've been building ethernet cables using traditional no-through RJ45 connectors for years. Unfortunately, I haven't built them often enough to develop the skills required for 100% success. It's really difficult to cut the wire jacket to the right length, arrange the wires in the right order, and fully insert all eight wires into the connector before crimping. I recently added a wireless access point to my network and lost 4 non-working connectors before I got a solid connection on both ends of the cable. In desperation I ended up ordering a Cable Matters package that runs through RJ45 modular jacks and couldn't be happier! Now that I can strip the jacket a few inches, all I have to do is uncoil the pairs of wires, place them in the correct order, and feed them through the connector until the jacket is completely inside before crimping. I have an old-school crimping tool that doesn't automatically trim excess wires sticking out of the end of the connector, but don't worry! Simply use a razor blade to trim any excess wires flush with the end of the connector and bend the wires back and forth a few times to break them off for a perfectly assembled Ethernet cable. Success on the first try and no more failures!
