I don't know what the negative reviews are really talking about because some people are too lazy to understand how these high end machines work. Yes, the instructions say to use tap water, but you should always use distilled water for any equipment that requires water. This includes your coffee maker and iron. Distilled water removes the metals and contaminants commonly found in your city/well water by simply using the purest water possible. The cleaning becomes almost imperceptible. Sure, you'll have to pay $0.87 a gallon of distilled water at the grocery store to get the most out of it, but that's nothing compared to the air quality you get afterwards. This device is easy to use and works wonders. It's quiet and efficient. I paid $120 for another humidifier and hate to death the labor involved (filters, dirt, noise, etc.). I've lost more money because of my time and expensive useless filters that harbor mold. I love Dyson products but this one is a must have for winter weather. And then PURIFIES the air by passing water through it using UV. Fiction.
