I use it in the car. I live in a dry desert and this solves the problem of having to breathe dry air (from air conditioning in summer or heating in winter). I don't know if you would call it a necessity, but it definitely makes traveling more comfortable. Update: It suddenly decided not to work. now it's nothing but a night light. I used it about 1 hour a day 3-4 days a week. I've had it for a little over 2 months. never dropped and never done anything with it.
