Review on Aketek Infrared Extender Receiver Repeater by Myel Shuey

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Does what it should. Impeccable simplicity.

This "IR bug" is exactly what you would expect. It works and has fairly long cables. I bought a 60 inch tv to hang over the fireplace so opening the old tv cabinet to control the tivo and stereo was not acceptable for my wife. All devices except the Tivo are HDMI-CEC (why Tivo, why?) so I only needed one transmitter for the Tivo. I could hook it up, slam the receiver against the front of the already closed stereo cabinet, the transmitter next to the Tivo receiver, and I was done. Installation took about 3 minutes. For this reason it only gets 4 stars. cable routing. The IR receiver is a large element that extends outside of the case. Then why does it have to be in the middle of a wiring sequence with two wires (power and transmitter) coming out of it? I understand that this is the electronics part, but it is the farthest component from the power supply and the farthest from the component to be controlled. If you have two wires, you need to run one wire from the external receiver to the component and another from the external receiver to the power supply. A kind of pain. The receiver should be at the end of the cable, the transmitter in the middle, and the power supply closest to the transmitter. It's not just personal preference, it's simple wiring logic.
