My father-in-law recently bought a new home with an older Hampton Bay ceiling fan in the master bedroom. Unfortunately the previous owners did not provide a remote control when they sold the house. Without a remote control, you cannot power the fan motor directly from the wall switch because the RF receiver contacts will go to the normally open (NO) position when power is turned off. This basically rendered the fan useless aside from the lights. This is because the RF receivers for the ceiling fan lights are normally closed (NC) when the power is off. This allows the lighting to be powered directly from the wall switch via the lighting break contact. Unlike newer models of Hampton Bay fans that have a replaceable RF receiver inside the hood, older models have a built-in RF receiver that is built into the fan motor housing and is not available. To determine if one of the older models is yours, examine the top of the fan motor housing. If you see a small four-position microswitch (similar to those on vintage garage door openers), you're in the same boat. Check out my attached photo to see what to look for. This design prevents the use of newer replacement remotes due to their separate RF receiver mounted in a retractable roof located upstream of the NO fan contacts in the engine case. Without a remote, your only practical solution is to replace the entire fan. Of course you can drop the fan, open the case and put a jumper wire around the fan motor's normally open contact and then reinstall the fan, but that's a lot of work for the skilled electrician that I am. However, I certainly wouldn't recommend the average homeowner attempting this or hiring a "jack of all trades" to do this as it could result in electric shock or fire due to a wiring error. And hiring a licensed electrician to do it properly and safely will probably take you at least 2 hours, which is more than the cost of simply buying a new fan. However, this Eogifee remote is a perfect fit. After setting the four position power button on the remote to match the fan switch positions, it was "up, up, down, down" for me and it worked great. My father-in-law now has air circulation in his bedroom which makes it much more comfortable. So, at just over $15, this little remote is more than a very good deal if you've lost your remote or if it's finally bloated.
