Review on 💡 CPS CSRU1 Compressor Saver - Energy-efficient Add-On for 1-3 Ton Units by Eric Teshome

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Easy to install, makes a noticeable difference

I installed this on a 2002 Trane 2.5 ton heat pump which had no problems starting. At this age I don't expect a heat pump to last much longer but for the price it was a cheap attempt at extending its life. Installation was pretty easy. My contactor was replaced earlier and the new one was installed upside down. Even if it were installed according to the unit's wiring diagram, the compressor common wire would be on T2 and not T1 as the instructions dictate. Attached to the box was an envelope with documents inside which was an electrical circuit; As always, before any work, I compared the schematic to what was actually in the block and found and traced the compressor wires to determine the appropriate places to connect the 5-2-1. My only other complaint about the installation was that the included screws were a little long (longer than the standard screws holding other components in my device, of course). My unit had pre-drilled and taped holes, but I was concerned that the extra screw length would interfere with the coils if I used them. Nothing fancy here either, at the very top of the cable room there was room to drill some new holes that were securely over the coils. Before installing the 5-2-1 kit, I measured the starting current on the compressor common wire and got a reading of 33.6A. I repeated the test after installing the kit and got 25.9 amps. By more subjective standards, compressor start-up times and noise appear to be reduced; it just kicks in a steady buzz right away, rather than seemingly taking half a second to pick up speed. Overall I would definitely recommend this kit (or the others from 5-2-1 depending on the size of the unit). Just be sure to trace the wires and compare to the diagram and don't blindly follow the instructions in the kit. I'm not tapping 5-2-1 for this; They do everything they can to support devices from a variety of manufacturers for decades, and there's always a weirdo out there. The same applies to the supplied screws; They will probably work for most people with no problems. Just use your head during installation and check the clearance behind the mounting points before screwing or drilling.

Pros
  • Engine cooling and air conditioning
Cons
  • Expensive
