Review on πŸ“ Empire E250IM Heavy Duty Professional Combination Square: Stainless Steel Blade, Inch and Metric Graduations, True Blue Vial - 12-Inch by Brandon Woodson

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Probably the best of the cheap combo squares.

First, there aren't any really good combinations under $100, but this one isn't that bad. I've looked at many of them. They have the plastic ones, it's a joke, cut with machining marks, and then a little bit better, like these. Says it's made in the USA so that means something. Oddly enough, it's blue. . The picture is black, I've had others in black, I saw yellow once, and this one is blue. No big deal, but it looks weird. maybe i like it You won't confuse it with StarrettNext, you can feel the numbers but I wouldn't say they're engraved. Some are missing color in several places. The rule is metric and inches on both sides, which is my real complaint. The other one I was looking at had a metric scale and the rest in inches, so since only one side is shown here I figured it would probably be the same. In any case, if your inch or metric units don't match what you're measuring, you'll need to flip the blade or contra-angle to read it. Really awkward when you're used to upper and lower inch rules on one side and inches and metric on the other. I'm an old timer, I do things that most people don't do with a combination of squares. It looks pretty square. I made an old ruler, drew a line and then flipped it and drew a line and it went through. I've tried two other brands in stores (the clerk was amazed) and they didn't come close. How is a square a square if it's not? Well, at least mine is, or very close to it. The finish isn't great, but it's better than the ones that looked like they were carved, and the case isn't steel, so forget about setting the 45-degree angle with a magnet. There is a saw blade on your table. On the plus side, the leveling bubble is nice and you can see it in 360 degrees, which I like. Don't remember using the combined square plane. If I'm serious about leveling, I use at least 4ft, but I like it. So I'll be using it for carpentry and my general cabinet work. For finer cabinet and machine work, I have an old Starrett machine that I pull out of the heirloom toolbox. Probably the best of the cheap combo squares, but it's not perfect. Your mileage may vary.
