Review on πŸ”ͺ KING Deluxe Medium Grain Sharpening by Steve Hauck

Revainrating 5 out of 5

One of the best whetstones I have ever used

Received this 1200 along with the King 6000 in an order from 2 different sellers. As you can see from the photos, I received good things, one deluxe version each. I have sharpened 3 of my own knives today since they arrived and I will be sharpening the rest. It's so good to use. The feedback is amazing, I notice immediately when I deviate from a bevel or don't follow the sharpening lines. 2-3 ridge passes at Rockwell 55-58 and 4-5 at Rockwell 60-62. Good cutting speed for a 1200 grit stone, but I can't wait for 300. I really like the feel of this stone. If you grew up around Sharp Pebble and other similar products, you will understand how important a good stone is when you have knives worth having! My German WΓΌsthof and Calphalon steels, cheap $15 knife (Rockwell 55), and Gyoto sedge (VG-10 at 61 HRC) sharpen much better than these soft stones and remind me of the old Arkansas Rocks I grew up on. The pressure response, the smooth feel, the ability to cut reminds me of those good stones. not new but old pre 1960's. Either way it's a good stone and considering the money it's a fantastic stone. My only complaint is how quickly it wears out since my pond has a lot of sand. There doesn't seem to be a problem as it's still flat and fits my line perfectly even after a few sharpenings. Maybe one day I'll switch to a different stone, but what if I didn't sharpen a few knives and use them often, just sharpen with a few kitchen knives once a week/month? it will last at least 5-10 years. 6000 is even better, almost mirror smooth on all steels. UPDATE: After using it a few times and getting used to it, the more I like the stone, the more I hate a certain thing about it. Dry season. I live in a dry part of the country and it still takes AT LEAST 3 days to sit on the dryer for it to be safely removed and sometimes I still get creases on the box. It cuts well when it has a rough surface and something to bite off, a decent tooth edge if you sharpen no higher than the grit. A fantastic base for bigger grains when you decide to go higher. Lots of sand but seems to be wearing off, or at least wearing it down as it's still flat on the one side I used. If I replace this it will be with a splash
