Review on πŸ“ ICY DOCK FatCage MB155SP-B: 5-Bay EZ-Tray 3.5 Inch SATA Hard Drive Hot-Swap Backplane Cage in Triple 5.25 Bay by Kimberly Perry

Revainrating 2 out of 5

So glad it's there but you'll probably have to move some metal

I recently bought two of these - and will probably buy a third. One of the ports on the first device was DOA, but Revain did that for me and I only had to shut down the server for a few minutes to replace the swap. The DOA port was worth one star in this rating. I won't dock because I have to bend and cut tabs in the case because the manufacturer didn't make my case. As others have pointed out, the guide tabs in the PC case get in the way. Some folded them back but I just took my trusty Dremel and cut them off. I have a CM Stryker case and used a vise to flatten the burrs on the original cage plates. A deep C clip would also help (as seen in another review). A couple of things I would like to point out: Some people complain about the heat. The problem is that higher capacity drives have an extra platter, while drives are thicker, completely covering the front and rear vents. Some air still flows, but not much and not enough to dissipate heat. However, I haven't seen anything above 40 degrees Celsius so far, so everything is fine. I leave the middle compartment empty for better air circulation. I can take 3 of these with me, so I have a room. The fan is a bit noisy. I've replaced them with quieter, more efficient fans, but that's not necessary. Secure the drive to the trays with the screws provided. They are flush for cleaning. I would highly recommend this to anyone building a NAS or other file server.

Pros
  • Don't waste too much time
Cons
  • boring packaging
