I usually use the Junior Artist Kits to sketch my painting on the surface that I will be using. For this review I have tried to get a complete picture. In the attached photo I experimented with a sheet of 320 grit 9x12 Scotch sandpaper available at hardware stores. In hindsight I should have prepared a sheet with a primer but decided the grit would take over the oil pastel. Scheduling and shifts to achieve. This created some painterly effects by using an acrylic medium between each layer. Using JA Chubbies helped fill in large areas of color where needed. Towards the end of my drawing and after 3 layers I was very happy with how it looked. At this stage I took the picture presented here. I will admit that because JA pastels are small and not as pigmented, I usually use the Expressionist or Specialist lines (also from Cray-Pas) or finish my paintings. I can't tell you how extremely difficult it was. not to do it. They glide easily over most types of paper and can be used on wood, masonite, canvas, glass or plastic. Some surfaces are best prepared with a primer. • The durability of oil pastels can be achieved in most projects by using an archival stable, non-acidic, non-reactive and non-yellowing fixer. Best in an airtight shadow box or framed under glass or acrylic. • JA is easily erased from the wall with a white household eraser. Some colors may rub off easily and may require a stronger lube and baking soda. First check the surface of the patch. • YES is slightly more difficult to remove from clothing, depending on whether the pastel was pressed lightly onto the fabric or pulled fully and scratched (penetrating the fibers of the clothing). A good stain remover will work on lightly marked areas, but heavily scratched areas of clothing may need a complete repaint. • The product is AP certified and described as non-toxic. another Sakura Cray-Pas product. Cons: Remember they are for students! • JA is not as pigmented and bulky as the same manufacturer's Expressionist or Specialist lines. They suit my needs perfectly. Using it for underpainting makes economic sense, and my paintings (without excessive self-criticism) come out well. I used them to complete some areas of my drawing where I wanted a little more detail or color without being overly saturated. The smaller, thinner size makes it easier to draw details like lines or fur. • There are some pastels and YouTubers using and demonstrating this product with good results.
