Review on πŸ“» Kaito KA580 Digital Solar Dynamo Crank Emergency Radio with Real-time Alert, MP3 Player & Phone Charger (Black) by Jennifer Franks

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Best Kaito "emergency " radio I've ever had.

Obviously being a DSP radio it has really good reception in the weather range, it doesn't show as a channel but as an actual frequency and the display is lit up for a while. So you have to turn the dial before the backlight turns on. The AM selectivity is pretty good, I can pick up weak stations very well but still have to consider the commonality with DSP radios, sometimes a station will sound louder if you key in a frequency to the left or right of the frequency. This is unique to DSP radios, as the "gold spot" on the dial depends on which side the frequency starts closest to the actual center channel of the desired frequency. The improvement is the lumen level of the 'light' and to make the tuning/volume knobs more durable the design has been changed to fit within the radio frame so a bump or drop will not break the exposed tuning/volume knob would. Pencils. Haven't used the grip yet and as I only got it yesterday I can't comment on how long the internal battery will last as I intend to only use the 5 volt input to keep it charged so I no need to use leaking AA batteries except as a last resort I haven't tried the tf card feature but it would be nice to have one just in case. Oh and FM reception is good with DSP too, I live in a fairly large metropolitan area and I don't need to extend the whip to get clear reception on most local frequencies.

Pros
  • Great for a small house
Cons
  • A shady purchase for the elderly
