Review on KitchenAid KQ902 Oven/Grill Safe Meat Thermometer - Leave-in, Stainless Steel, Temperature Range: 120F to 200F by Robert Berio

No winner in my candy production.

I needed a replacement candy thermometer and in my research and final decision I chose the KitchenAid brand as I have always been happy/satisfied with other KitchenAid products. I make a few batches of candy every week in my small country kitchen, and this thermometer just didn't make it into my book. Easy to read, but after some disappointing results with my caramels I found that the calibration was off 8 degrees. Such a large discrepancy is not at all suitable for making candy. Another damaging problem is that the sliding pot hanger is not securely attached to the main body of the thermometer in any way. So if you have to take the thermometer out of the pot to add ingredients in an intermediate step, the hanger will fall off the thermometer completely. Since it comes off completely, you will need to clean the thermometer body before reassembling. It also does not contribute to successful candy making. It should also be added here that the small silicone sleeve on the pot clamp slides very easily and came loose completely when I tried to add it in between. All in all this is an item I would not buy again and if you depend on YOUR thermometer being accurate, reliable, durable and easy to use then this is not for you.
