I don't often write reviews. However, this product deserves a mention. After installing a bumper hitch and 1UP rack on our new RV, which we are carrying an expensive bike(s) on, a close friend of mine remarked that it was a recipe for disaster. He suggested we google "wheel bumper failure" and see the results. Not good. Now our relatively new RV had a boost corner and might have looked good, but these failures seem to happen suddenly and without warning. Given that thousands of dollars worth of bikes are typically hung from the back of a van, this seemed like a bad idea. My first thought was to weld on some sort of bracket, but that's tedious and would require all sorts of repainting etc. When I searched later, I found a product aptly named "Safety Strut" and it seemed perfect. Thick powder-coated steel and $75; Also, you can install it yourself. Installation was pretty easy. Easier than I expected. Follow the instructions and securely fasten this bracket as you drill. Your suggestion of starting with the larger bit to center the smaller one is a good one. Also, when drilling holes, start small and work your way up to make things easier. I needed bigger holes than I expected for the screws. All in all, the installation took about 30 minutes. Highly recommend for some peace of mind for a rear bumper bike rack.
