** Conclusion: wait until the firmware/drivers for VT4900 have stabilized before buying ** I bought this KVM/docking station because it looked (and cost) like a high quality piece of hardware, which allows me to connect three external monitors to my MacBook Pro (Late 2020) as well as a keyboard/mouse, headphones, webcam, etc. This also allows me to easily switch the same things over to my Windows PC while sitting at the same table. . The MacBook Pro normally only supports two external monitors if you connect them directly, but this dock actually does the encoding and allows you to have three external monitors via a single USB-C connection back to the host computer. Pretty cool! β¦ if it works. Unfortunately, in my experience on my MacBook, one of the monitors would become unresponsive about 2-3 times a day (or every few hours). I was checking the DisplayLink daemon on my MacBook's activity monitor (a service that acts as an intermediary between the Mac and the dock) and it crashed. i felt sad On Windows, I didn't notice the monitor sticking out, although I've used it for shorter periods of time compared to my MacBook. It was quite frustrating to successfully switch between two computers without power cycling the KVM and/or shutting down the other computer. What good is KVM in this case? Not as much. All in all, here are the pros and cons: Pros: + Supports 3 external monitors (if your host supports USB-C) + Lots of ports, including Ethernet + Allows MacOS to get +3 external displays without AirPlayCons: + Agent crashes ab regular on MacOS + switching between hosts confused + switching between hosts is buggy I would wait 3-6 months for drivers and firmware to stabilize, at least for Mac. There is a forum for DisplayManager software but no such forum for hardware, VisionTek.
