I tried this filter after throwing away 2 other filters. Both were too loud and turned the aquarium into a mixer with less flow than this one. You can use this filter in small aquariums. Mine is set up in a 3.5 gallon tank, keeping it clean with plenty of flow but designed not to blow fish everywhere. Reduce the flow to a minimum while feeding, then turn it back on when they're done eating. I do not recommend this filter if you are trying to induce flow in an aquarium. To do this, try the Whisper PF10 instead - it produces 15% less total flow than this unit, but creates significant flow in the tank (if that's what you want).
