I have been using this style of dowels for many years. They are easy to install. I use a stud finder to make sure there is no stud (they don't work directly on the stud, in this case just use a screw). I use an ice pick to mark the spot. This makes it easier to push the guide into the wall and ensures that it goes exactly where I need it. Do not overtighten the screw, which is easy to do with an electric wrench. This should be obvious, but try not to hang more weight than recommended. If you need serious strength, a lever bolt or more invasive anchor would be more appropriate.
