This old 940nm technology is better than the new

I bought three different types of 940nm lamps to complement my surveillance system. I'm writing this review in hopes that it will help someone make a decision. I had several requirements. The less light the better. They had to have a fairly narrow beam of less than 60 degrees. They had to be strong enough and invisible to the naked eye. The second light from CMVision https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00Q15GLHE/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1 is about an inch wider but significantly less deep (shallow). The LEDs are centered in the middle, so you might get noticeably less light if you cover the edges with vegetation, for example. The third light I looked at was https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B07XFL9G52/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1 - it was by far the smallest. Both this light and the other CMVision lights are very faintly visible when viewed directly from about two feet away, but are completely invisible from further away. The third microlight had the most light in the visible spectrum and was easily seen from 10-12 feet away. In order of beam power - this light was the most powerful, Microlight and the newer CMVision light were about equal. The beam angle of the Microlight was narrowest at around 45 degrees. This light has about 90 degrees of weak IR and a very strong hot spot inside of about 30 degrees. The second newer CMVision light source has a fairly even 90 degree beam pattern. All three consume about the same amount of electricity. In the end, if you can block your peripheral light and the hotspot hits critical areas, this light is a winner. Then you have a relatively well-lit area in front of you, with some range where you need it.

Pros
  • Great for outdoor activities
Cons
  • Not sure
