Revised-> After trying to use it again I realized how difficult it is. In a tight space like my 5 gallon with plants and roots there just isn't a good way to get the suction to work. Also, the hole was too big to reach the smaller sections of the lower tank. It removed the water too quickly for me to clean the substrate well and I ended up knocking out my jewelry. It was a disaster! - Then I bought a micro cleaner with a hand pump. MUCH better results! While it is suitable for a 5 gallon aquarium I would not recommend it unless you have aquarium decor. I'm a beginner and didn't know how it worked before. You must fully submerge the end of the "pump" and be able to jerk it up and down underwater without splashing or startling the fish. I don't have much experience with this, but I figured it out pretty quickly. In retrospect, the Mini would have been easier to control given my limited space.
