Review on πŸ”” Dakota Alert MURS Alert Transmitter (MAT) - Battery Operated PIR Motion Sensor with Telescopic Antenna - Enhancing Multi Use Radio Service by Chris Chincuanco

Still serves a limited market and making little progress

First, this device works. However, it will gradually break down when exposed to the elements. Problems arise due to its overall construction and design. Previous versions of the case attempted to completely seal the insides, but this resulted in some condensation and deterioration of the electronics. A retractable metal antenna that allowed water to enter the fuselage was also a possibility. The current version is ventilated by small baffles surrounding the antenna mount and one that acts as a drain/vent at the bottom of the case. They also switched to a SMA plug-in antenna with a rubber ducky. I can understand the logic behind these changes, but users continue to report issues due to the relatively open internal environment. This is a catch-22 that can only really be solved with much safer circuitry, turning the case into an extra layer of protection rather than the main one. Dakota seems pleased the device hasn't changed much, so we'll need a competitor to bring it to market, or we'll fix it ourselves: buy a marine battery box and a roll of silicone pipetape/electrical caulking tape, 15 $ for both . Throw away the cover and install the transmitter in the battery compartment for another layer of protection. Drill a hole for the antenna and wrap the protruding part with sealing tape at the top of the battery compartment. It transmits MURS and CTCSS tones on all channels and transmits at 1.1 watts. There are also three sensitivity/range settings. The voice in this latest iteration is now female, slightly more melodic and less prosaic than the male voice in previous versions.

Pros
  • Great design
Cons
  • Crumpled packaging
