When I was looking for a replacement for my outdated Garmin Edge 1000 that had been dying of battery for a long time, I was looking at Wahoo and Hammerhead devices when I came across the Bryton. At first glance, it almost looks like a direct replacement. Same screen size, same resolution. Pairing with ANT+ radars (but I only know of Varia), pairing with ANT+ (or Bluetooth) sensors. Plus turn-by-turn navigation. I put it in quotes because this is a follower of this device. I love the device (mostly) differently. Pairing sensors is easy. I've used it with a Garmin heart rate monitor and a Trek Duotrap cadence/speed sensor. Minor issues mentioned by other reviewers regarding screen lag appear to have been fully addressed as the device seems to be much faster than my old Edge 1000, particularly with satellite positioning. I also like to use the device setup app, it's very convenient. . Adjusting the screens on the device itself is basically the same as what I do on my Edge 1000. The app also syncs with services like Strava or RideWithGPS and pulls your routes directly from them. Big! The two minor issues I have are the charging port (micro USB - really?) and the screen contrast in bright daylight - could be better. The only thing I really don't recommend this device for is basically what it's marketed for - turn-by-turn navigation. It's very cumbersome and doesn't work properly - or at least not the way other devices work. It's a shame. I do group rides with our club and rely on my Garmin rather than reference sheets. First you need to process any routes you select from RideWithGPS or Strava to create turn-by-turn directions. The device will not do this on its own like Garmin devices do. You also really need to create routes with one of these services as using the Bryton app is terrible for that. It's almost impossible to draw a route along a side road next to a main road as the app uses the main road by default. I use a track section that leaves the main road, goes down a small side street and then turns left to cross the main road straight ahead. It's much safer than trying to turn left on the main road. The app won't let me do this segment, but Garmin Connect and RideWithGPS do it every time. Navigation while driving is also almost non-existent. First, the device doesn't actually provide turn alerts. Garmins and Wahoos will warn you about a tenth of a mile before the turn and then again at the turn, displaying a mini-map showing the turn. Bryton doesn't do any of this, which basically forces you to keep the map screen on all the time. You can add tack info data to any of the main screens, but you must use the large data section to do this - the data pages can be split to show up to 12 sections. Only screens with 7 or fewer sections can display graphics, and only 6 section screens with 2 graphic sections correctly display turn information with name, turn arrow, and distance to. Also, the turn information generated by the application is often not accurate. I had a few corners where the arrow that appeared indicated it was going straight, but it was actually a corner or a slight corner. If you really don't pay attention to the street name, you'll miss the turnoff. After all, a redirect when you're off course is problematic at best. You must have a phone connected to the device, as well as data - good luck if you're driving in a rural area with patchy coverage. I also found it confuses the device and tries to steer me miles away. For example, in the last metric century, we ventured off route to stop at a gas station. All we had to do to get back on course was down one street and turning left, but the squad tried to divert me to a spot before we went off course. It wasn't until a few miles later that he noticed I was back on course and changed route to show me my course. So if you're looking for navigation, look elsewhere. If Brighton corrects this area I wholeheartedly recommend this device. Instead, I'll probably return it and get a Wahoo or Garmin.
