I needed a versatile pair of 7x35 binoculars for a vacation in Hawaii. I've taken them everywhere from hiking to boating, whale watching, sea turtles, wild goats, ducks and seabirds in flight etc. I used to only have so-so Bushnell binoculars which I thought were pretty good. I wanted to buy the lightweight, compact 8x21 binoculars from Olympus, recommended by Consumer Reports for around $60. Luckily they were nowhere to be found. After a bit of research, unlike Nikon, I didn't find any positive experiences on bird expert sites on the internet that confirm this. They seemed too good to be true in terms of quality and features. For $110 they had quality construction and lenses and were engineered to be truly waterproof and fog-free so they don't go bad. Everything I read said the transparency was also very good to excellent. This is an understatement. I can't imagine how much more clarity or visibility in low light you can get from a more expensive $300 Nikon pair of binoculars, or an expensive $500, $1000, $1500 pair of Japanese or German binoculars with optics. I didn't even realize I was using the Action EX binoculars when it was almost dark. It's a sign of quality and they have it. The clarity is just amazing. Why should I pay more? They fit well in the hand and are comfortable to use. You look great too. It's not an ultra-light compact, but it's a real pair of binoculars. You have the usual quick center focus and a focus setting based on the difference between the left and right eyes. They are fully covered in rubber to withstand real-world bumps, scratches and drops. The binoculars have a strap but the case doesn't, so you'll need to store the case or attach it to something else. If you can use and appreciate excellent quality binoculars, this is a very good waste of money.
