new model, new benefits and trade-offs

We had some delays with warranty replacements which have now been resolved. We have both the previous model and the new model. Combination of review of the new model (2 months?) and 7 months of experience with the old model. We have 3 dogs (2 Collies 80#, a Samoyed 50#. All muscular, very active. Very strong. We also walk well after dark, up/down the wooded mountainside and on the driveway. Visibility and the ability to Seeing dogs is important through the trees As we walk 30-45 minutes at night battery life is crucial As dogs run through the undergrowth a tearaway collar is a lifesaver We have tried at least 5 models from SINGLE manufacturers (both old and new from Total is this new collar for our purposes the best compromise, at least if the battery life is acceptable. The loose collar is easier to hold on to the branch. Both the old and the new design have a break, they are not durable for use as a latch. New Model on the first break (last night) the connector broke it's a replacement ed so you get a 2nd chance the old ones just snapped back on small sample: old e collars, maybe 3 breaks, new model, only one. An old plug has never broken. Visibility: the old one was too bright when all leds were on so we only used one color which is different for each of the 3 dogs, the new model is LESS bright but OK (no option to choose a color). HOWEVER, this collar has the BEST VISIBILITY of any collar we've tried on oncoming cars at night, even with a single color! Even it was very bright but perfect for walking at night when the dogs are somewhere on the mountainside. The new one isn't that bright even with all the LEDs on. But good enough. The hose of the new one is LESS transparent. So the new one isn't as bright when all the LEDs are on, there's no way to narrow it down to one color to save battery life (it probably won't be bright enough anyway). Battery life: The previous model is quickly empty when all LEDs light up. The new one lasts significantly longer with all LEDs (about 90 minutes, the old one could be 50 minutes). The old model ran 90 minutes with ONE color at the slowest flash rate, the new one seems to run 90 minutes with all colors at the slowest flash rate. We haven't seen a single battery failure in a couple of months. Both models charge in a reasonable time. Electrical Reliability: We have found consistent quality issues with Chinese batteries in Chinese-made products. We tried 5 different models of LED collars. The old model was better but 2 out of 4 died. It's too early to talk about this new and (really) improved model. Wish list: - I wish the documentation would mention which LED settings give the best battery life/lowest power consumption - I wish it might be possible to swap out the rechargeable battery. Batteries are $3, and it's frustrating to throw away a $17 collar because the batteries (after a few weeks!) I want the disconnect mechanism to fail in such a way that the connector is NOT destroyed after a disconnect. a more transparent tube that absorbs less light.
