Review on Scilab by Robert Long

This tool can be used by all skill levels, even those who have never programmed before! The interface of this program makes it easy enough that anyone could use without having any previous experience in coding or math calculations (which are very important parts).

I would say its pretty reliable but sometimes there may come some bugs which make you want throw your laptop out from frustration level!! But as long i am using scipy library my problems will get solved automatically so no worries about anything at least not now :) Try solving small projects with ease like calculating surface area etc., It's really helpful while doing homework assignments especially if they don't give specific instructions regarding what needs calculation because then just go ahead an do one yourself :D.
