Our dog has problems with our wooden staircase, so we wanted a gate that wouldn't let him in but would be easy for us to get through. We also didn't want to screw it into the wall or railing at the base of our stairs. This is perfect for our 42" opening with gates and a 12" extension. It comes with wall brackets to hold the pads in place, but they recommend screwing them on to hold the gate. Instead we bought third party wall mounts designed for this type of gate (see photo). They distribute pressure over a larger area of the wall to avoid making a hole in it and have a rubber backing to prevent slipping. They were definitely worth the extra $10. The latch is easy to use but may require 2 hands. However, it seems to work fine and the gate doesn't move when in use.
