Leather belt for knives

I use it with a set of paper wheels to sharpen knives. The power belt is the final step. I cover the circle with a green polishing paste and finish the knife with it. When used correctly, the knife blade becomes razor sharp. Using it with a drill takes some getting used to. I would have preferred a 6" or 8" round leather wheel for my grinder, but I couldn't find one that fits the universal 1/2" shanks and doesn't have a chamfer. If you are using a vertical shaft wheel, you must learn how to properly position the knife on the edge of the wheel. It should spin slower than paper wheels. Paper wheels can be used at speeds up to 3500 RPM, while a leather belt should be between 600 and 800 RPM for proper use. Speed-wise, RPMs in the 200-300 range are also acceptable and work fine. Some people use them with hand drills that are set in a fixed position. I use mine with my drill press. After practicing with the leather wheel, I was able to improve the blade of my knives after basic sharpening with a waxed grinding wheel and a paper polishing wheel coated with white polish. The knives that come off the paper wheels are very sharp, but after straightening they become factory or professional. I have not tested the knives to see how long they stay sharp compared to factory or professional sharpening. This test takes a long time.
