I cut it an inch more than the window pane on both sides. Then I lined up the top and one side with the window glass (and this is the important part) and pressed them down so they wedged a bit between the glass and the wood. Then I cut the other side and bottom with an exact knife and a straight edge. It's best to have someone help you by holding the tape while you cut. I didn't do this on my first one and it slipped a bit and wasn't tight enough so those edges started curling. I used the synthetic lube I use on my aquarium tubes and it does an excellent job of keeping those edges from curling. Looks great and very elegant.
